Protagonist Storage

When video game protagonists lose their mainstream appeal, the various companies that hold their rights don’t want to have to keep them around anymore. They're put in the top-security "forgetting facility," never to be seen again unless there's renewed interest.

Of course, most video game protagonists are exceptionally resilient and capable, so they need to be kept in very secure bindings. As video game characters don't need to eat or suffer the physical effects of long-term inactivity, the vaults have an "out of sight, out of mind" policy and are checked once a decade at best. Permanent restraints and sealed doors do the job of any guard.
